چکیده

Tire/wet road friction depends on two road-surface texture scales: the macrotexture (centimeterto millimeter dimensions) is responsible for the speed dependency of friction, and the microtexture (submillimeter dimensions) is responsible for the friction level at any speed. This paper deals firstly with the description of road-microtexture, the macrotexture scale being well documented. Considering the fact that rubber energy-loss controls tire/wet road friction and that angularity of road-surface asperities influences greatly tire deformation, the second author has proposed a description method derived from the motif-combination technique. This method defines two parameters related to the sharpness of asperity summits and the relative position of these summits. A model has been then proposed by the first author to describe the friction-speed curve from roadsurface macroand microtexture descriptors, tire-related characteristics (rubber properties, wear) and road wetness. The description is based on the Stribeck curve. The speed-dependency friction model is applied to the analysis of car-braking tests. Comparisons between calculated and measured friction-coefficients at different braking speeds are presented and discussed.

A mechanical model for the prediction of the tire/road friction

The viscoelastic deformation of tire rubber by road surface asperities was modeled by the rolling contact between a Kelvin solid and a surface motif, which is the part of surface profiles between two peaks. Stress and strain calculations showed that contact losses might occur locally, depending on the rolling speed, the viscoelastic properties of the Kelvin solid and the geometry of the motif. ...

Influence of Road Surface Microtexture on Thin Water Film Traction

This paper deals with the contribution of road surface microtexture to the relationship between tire/road friction and water depth. The main objectives are the estimation of local water depths trapped at the tire/road interface and the definition of a critical water depth which can be used for driver assistance and information systems. Tests are performed in laboratory. Specimens are slabs made...

Prediction of Tire/Wet Road Friction and its Variation with Speed from Road Macro- and Microtexture, and Tire-Related Properties

In this paper, validation of a model for the speed dependency of friction is presented. Based on the shape of the friction – speed curve, the model assumes that calculation of friction at any speed would need an estimate of friction at very low speed, and the knowledge of its variation with speed described by the Stribeck curve. Two existing models developed at LCPC are then coupled to predict ...

Thermal Analysis of Tire

One of the great enemies of rubber compounds is heat. Heat will cause chemical and physical degradation of vulcanized rubber as well as a considerable loss in its strength. A major source of heat generation in a tire is due to internal friction resulting from the viscoelastic deformation of the tire as it rolls along the road. Another source of heat generation in a tire is due to its contact fr...
